If you’re currently entering the job market, one of the best things you can do to help your chances of getting a position that interests you is to be aware of some job interview questions you might come across during your potential hiring process.  These questions can be tricky, and employers are definitely looking for key words embedded into your sentences to help sway them one way or the other.  Let’s take a look at a few example questions and explain the best ways to answer them.

1. Why did you leave your last position?

As hard as it might be, you must remain positive if asked this question.  If it was a terrible work environment, you must hold back from emotional answers. The best statement to give in this situation is just say something such as “I wanted to go in a different direction.” Or “I just couldn’t see myself working at that job long term.”  This way, your employer will never know your potential dissatisfaction towards the last workplace, but see you as someone who wants to make a career change for the better.

2. What kind of salary would you like to see?

This question just plain stinks!  Not only is it loaded, it ends up leaving you feeling awkward and intimidated to ask what you might feel you’re worth.  The best advice is to NOT answer it.  Instead, turn the question back on them.  Say something like “I’d like to be paid what the company feels I’m worth to them.  Can you tell me a range that people in this position get paid?”  If you’re lucky, they’ll answer you honestly and you can then give an honest answer on your feelings about the salary.

3. If you could have the perfect job, what would you be doing?

This is another sneaky question.  Obviously do not answer with the job description of where you’re interviewing.  Instead, keep it general.  Don’t say you want to be the boss of a big company, or not work at all.  Just say you want a job that offers good job security, perhaps health benefits, a friendly environment and superiors who are there to offer assistance when you need it.

Job interview questions can definitely be a drag when you’re caught off guard.  Some are loaded and devious, while others just require a generic and well-executed answer.  Employers are looking for your presentation of your answers more than they are looking at the exact words coming out of your mouth.  This is especially true when they ask you about hobbies.  Be professional, yet relaxed and those job interview questions and answers sessions will go smoothly!
